Vows

Lawrence

Connie, you inspire me. You’ve constantly pushed yourself in your own direction, and you’ve always urged forward my direction in the world. You’ve reminded me how much a moral path matters, and one that holds on to its aspirations. You’ve expanded my view of the social away from casual socializing to encompass all of society. And over and over, you walk before me; over and over, I see through your eyes.

We’ve shared so much already. We’ve soared over mountains and crash-landed onto their crags, and the result is that I’m closer to you now than I’ve ever been to someone else. You’ve embodied the answer to the question I put to you back when we were internet friends who’d met once: how can your emotional connections and your companions in play be the very same people?

Connie, I love you. I hold a deep respect and wonder for the person that you are. Today, in front of our community, I choose you, freely and with conviction, to be my home, my family, and my lifelong companion.

I promise to share my life with you, inwardly and outwardly, both in our world of elephants and meta-puns, and as dynamic social actors.

I promise to bend history in the direction of justice.

I promise to push continuously towards self-improvement, and to push you to improve yourself as well.

I promise to clarify what’s unclear between us, and to be unafraid of the truth.

I promise to give you room to speak, to breathe, and to be alone when you need it.

I promise to explore nations and continents with you, and sometimes to journey into your game worlds together.

I promise to pursue what’s true for us, not what’s merely selfish or fashionable.

I promise to always find in you a reminder of what real, personal love can be.

I promise to keep tending our original spark, from when we reached out to each other by written word and virtual voice.

I promise to believe in your possibilities, in your character, in whatever and whoever you might become.

I promise to support you, to comfort you, and to trust in you.

I promise to paint you a lovely world.

I promise to move courageously into the risk of love with you. Though I do not know our road, I commit my life to the way.

Connie

Lawrence, I told you once that I thought magic was when the improbably good happens anyway. Among the infinite possibilities of the universe, you and I moved toward each other again and again until we had each carved a space for the other in the bedrock of our lives. Our story is the best magic I know.

You have seen me at my best and my worst, and you have always been willing to try again. The patience, generosity, and unwavering acceptance you have shown me inspires me to be better. Your openheartedness teaches me to be more vulnerable and more trusting. I admire your deep intellect and your untarnished faith that, somehow, things will work out in the end. You are my perfect example of things working out in the end.

Lawrence, I love you. I hold a deep respect and wonder for the person that you are. Today, in front of our community, I choose you, freely and with conviction, to be my home, my family, and my lifelong companion.

Wherever the path of life takes us, I promise to be your teammate, your steadfast partner, and your fiercest advocate.

I promise to walk long miles beside you, especially when I’m exhausted, my feet hurt, we’re out of water, the sun is setting, and we’re only halfway down the mountain.

I promise not to give up on you.

I promise to cultivate the part of your spirit that is untamed and untamable, and I promise to give you the freedom you need to explore the wild expanses of your imagination.

I promise to let you turn up the volume sometimes when we listen to music.

I promise to create with you: to create a future together, to create art, to create solutions to the new problems we seem so good at inventing.

I promise to embrace life’s complexities with you.

I promise to be my authentic, unselfconscious self with you, to offer you my mind and my heart and my body without shame or apology.

I promise to try my best to understand if once in a while you don’t want to drop whatever you’re doing to give me a back rub.

I promise to hold space in my heart for all the versions of you that you will become.

I promise to move courageously into the risk of love with you. Though I do not know our road, I commit my life to the way.
